Olomouc is a beautiful city in the Czech Republic about 220km east of Prague. It has wonderful baroque churches, an opera house, cobbled streets and numerous coffee houses. I worked there for a year 1997/1998 and have revisited to see friends almost every year since. My Czech students also came to visit me, not many left without doing some translation. Olomouc has a fascinating history, it has suffered three regime changes, it has always been a garrison city (the most heavily fortified city in Austria during Marie Theresa's reign) and is a major railway junction. All of this is reflected in its postal history which you can learn more about by reading 'The Postal History of Olomouc' a 108 page A4 book, produced by The Czechoslovak Philatelic Society of Great Britain, which has around 1400 full colour illustrations.
